You Can Have Your Vision Corrected While You Sleep!

Orthokeratology is also referred to as “ Eye Braces”, “Ortho- K”, “overnight vision” and “Corneal Refractive Therapy”. With our Ortho-K program, custom made, highly breathable contact lenses gently reshape the cornea during sleep. An Ortho-K lens acts like a retainer for the eyes by helping to reshape the cornea and change how the light is focused at the retina while you sleep, providing you with clearer vision when you wake up. It works by reshaping your cornea (the front part of the eye) in a similar way to laser vision correction. The difference is that Ortho-K is non-surgical and non-invasive. There is no ablating/cutting, no laser, no requirement for medications and it is reversible. In the morning, the lenses are removed and you can enjoy clear vision all day long without glasses or contacts. Retainer lenses (similar to dental braces) are worn nightly to maintain the results. Our Ortho-K program is an alternative to glasses, regular contact lenses or laser surgery. Children can be treated with our Ortho-K program as long as the parent feels that the child is responsible enough to insert, remove, and maintain the Ortho-K lenses. It is especially beneficial for young school-aged children who often experience increases in nearsightedness every year. Worldwide, many children have undergone an Ortho-K program due to its added benefit of controlling/reducing the progression of nearsightedness over time.

Who is a good candidate for Ortho-K?

Patients with healthy eyes and no history of injuries or ocular diseases.
Children who experience increases in their nearsighted prescription at every visit to the eye doctor.
Children and Teenagers that want to be glasses-free, but are too young for refractive surgeries.
Patients who are not good candidates for laser eye surgery.
This program is particularly pertinent to high myopes (people with nearsightedness) and to children with progressive myopia and astigmatism
Patients who find traditional contact lenses uncomfortable due to dryness or irritation may benefit from ortho-k lenses.
Patients who engage in sports and have active lifestyles may also enjoy the freedom that ortho-k provides.

To determine whether or not a patient is a good candidate for Ortho-k lenses, the first step would be to book an eye examination with our doctors to perform an ortho-k consult. This will determine the overall ocular health of the eye and also take a map of your cornea using a diagnostic instrument called a topographer. If you are a good candidate, the measurements and map of your cornea will allow a computer controlled lathe to shape the lens or "eye brace" with specialized curves which helps to reshape the corneal tissue.

What are the main benefits of Ortho-K?

Ortho-K can drastically reduce your child's progression of nearsightedness.
Ortho-K is a popular choice for patients who find that their eyeglasses prescription is increasing every time they go to the eye doctor.
Ortho-K facilitates clear vision during the day without eyeglasses or contact lenses.
Ortho-K offers patients who are active in sports (especially swimming), people who find contact lenses uncomfortable and people who are simply tired of wearing glasses a viable option to see without eyewear.
Orhto-K offers an option for people who are not good candidates for laser eye surgery or who dislike the idea of having elective surgery on their eyes.

Unlike laser surgery, Ortho-K is completely reversible if you are not happy with the results.

If you ever decide that you want to pursue laser eye surgery or prefer to wear glasses, you can easily reverse Ortho-K treatments by no longer wearing your contact lens brace while you sleep.

Is the Ortho-K program safe?

The risks of Ortho-K are generally the same as those of regular contact lens wear. A doctor needs to initiate and supervise Ortho-K treatments to ensure that the cornea is measured properly and accurately, the lenses are performing effectively, the eyes are adapting well to the lenses and that there is no risk of damage present. Doctor-supervised Ortho-K treatments are proven to be very safe and effective. Our Ortho-K program includes regular eye health check-ups that are included in the program fee.
